Can daycare prevent leukemia?
Monday April 25, 2005
Research on how to prevent childhood leukemia has turned up a surprising suggestion: Send your baby to daycare. A story from Reuters outlines two studies, one that indicates leukemia is caused by a genetic defect coupled with an infection that compromises the immune system, and another that finds children who attended daycare or playgroups in their first few months of life are significantly less likely to develop leukemia. Early exposure to infections, it is thought, may strengthen the immune system of children with the genetic defect so that it can protect them better.
