First Five: Celiac Disease

Wednesday October 26, 2005
The First Five fact sheet for today is for parents of children newly diagnosed with celiac disease, an inherited intestinal disorder that makes it impossible for the body to digest gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and oats. Because the restricted diet for kids with celiac disease can cause a real problem with school lunches and snacks and Halloween parties, a page on Preparing the School for Your Child with Celiac Disease has been added as well, with some nice letters to print out for your child's teacher, principal, counselor, school nurse, and cafeteria staff. If you're interested in supporting CD research and advocacy, one nice way to do it is by buying a SnuggL'Up Pillow, a portion of the proceeds of which will go to the Celiac Disease Foundation.
