Recent news stories, like yesterday's report on PTSD in the parents of children with cancer and the ongoing saga of the Wernecke family, have made me wonder whether doctors focus so sharply on the diseased cells in front of them that they never look at the whole child, or the child's whole environment. Yet surely things like stress and depression and anxiety, both in the young patient and in the family responsible for that patient's care and emotional development, can have a significant impact on treatment.
