Toy ratings on online shopping sites may give a good idea of how useful and appropriate a plaything is for a "normal" child, but your concerns as the parent of a child with special needs may be different. AblePlay's got the goods on toys well-suited to children with special needs. The site rates playthings in four disability categories: Physical disabilities, including cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, spina bifida, paraplegia, quadriplegia and developmental delays; sensory disabilities, including hearing impairment, visual impairment, and sensory integration disorder; communicative disabilities, including autism, PDD, speech and language delay, and stuttering; and cognitive disabilities, including Down syndrome, mental retardation, fetal alcohol syndrome, hydrocephalus, ADHD and learning disabilities. Toys are rated as exceptional, very good, good, adequate or not suitable for children in a particular category, and you can search by disability category, product type, age range, brand, or product name. Reviews list descriptions and skills for each category, along with adaptation ideas. Start shopping! ... More Sites of the Day
