Agree or disagree, this book will make you mad

Saturday December 24, 2005
Reading "101 Reasons to Avoid Ritalin Like the Plague," today's addition to the Harried Parent's Book Club, reminded me strongly of the flap earlier this year over Tom Cruise's criticism of Ritalin in particular and psychiatry in general. In a poll on this site, 318 readers responded that Cruise was a crackpot and 315 called him dangerously deluded ... but 269 thought he was bringing up an important subject, and 107 called his opinions right on the money. Those of the latter opinions will probably feel validated by "101 Reasons," and those who have followed author Howard Glasser's Nurtured Heart Approach may well be receptive to at least parts of his anti-med crusade. Those who feel strongly that Ritalin and drugs like it have saved their children and their families, on the other hand, will likely feel as angered by it as they were by Cruise's tirade. Does the degree to which the actor was shouted down indicate that this issue has already been largely settled, or that others have to raise their voices even louder? Whether this book makes you angry at doctors and drug companies that conspire to subdue kids with medication, or angry at people who still don't accept ADHD as real and Ritalin as necessary, it will likely energize you to fight your particular good fight. ... Have you read "101 Reasons to Avoid Ritalin Like the Plague"? Rate it in the book club forum.
