School nurses a vanishing breed

Are school nurses a relic of the past? Ironically, as more and more children are requiring in-school medication for problems like ADHD, asthma, diabetes, and food allergies, fewer and fewer U.S. schools have nurses on-site to administer them. According to a report on CNN.com, this leaves school secretaries and, sometimes, on-call parents to fill the gap. The lack of full-time nurses in schools is bad news for parents of children with special medical needs, whose lives may be at risk; and also for parents of children with special behavioral needs, who often find refuge from school stresses in the nurse's office. (My son, for one, has used the restroom in the nurse's office for years to keep him from getting in trouble with his buddies in the boys' room.) Does your child's school have a full-time nurse?
