Autistic player scores big in basketball game
Friday February 24, 2006
Here's a story that's a joyful opposite to last year's tale of a T-ball coach who paid a player to bean an autistic teammate so he wouldn't be able to play: Jason McElwain, an autistic high school senior in Rochester, N.Y., who is manager of the school's basketball team, got sent into the season's last game with his team way ahead ... and proceeded to score 20 points, including six three-pointers. "I've had a lot of thrills in coaching," his coach, Jim Johnson, is quoted as saying. "I've coached a lot of wonderful kids. But I've never experienced such a thrill." It's amazing what can happen when everyone's included, and gets a chance to excel. ... More on sports for children with special needs
