Footage of autistic basketball player tugs heartstrings
Sunday February 26, 2006
On Friday, I mentioned the story of an autistic high school senior and basketball team manager who got to suit up for the season's last game, got put in the game just to see what it was like, then wound up scoring 20 points. If that story made you tear up a little, grab a box of tissues before watching this video* of a news report on the game. The film of Jason McElwain talking about his experience and actually living it -- with his classmates and teammates cheering wildly -- is pretty heart-tugging, tear-duct-opening stuff. If you watch the news much, you may already have seen this footage, shot by a parent in the stands. But if, like me, you're too busy child-wrangling to do much TV viewing before bedtime, here's your chance to be on the sentimental scene. ... * UPDATE: The above link has been changed, since CBS pulled the clip from YouTube. The Google Video link is good as of March 8. More information.
