Brian Littrell Healthy Heart Club for Kids
Wednesday April 12, 2006
If you've heard the name "Brian Littrell," you've probably had a preteen in your house within the past decade who was gaga over the Backstreet Boys, of which Littrell is a member. You're less likely to know that, back before Backstreet, Littrell was himself a child with special needs. Born with a ventricular septal defect that made him susceptible to infections, he was hospitalized at age 5 with bacterial endocarditis and was not expected to live -- but defied the doctors and survived to go on to boy band fame. Years later, at age 23, he had open-heart surgery to repair the congenital defect. His health struggles led him to form the Brian Littrell Healthy Heart Club for Kids, which "offers education, exercise, nutrition, and counseling to children ages 8-12 who suffer from a heart condition or have a strong disposition towards developing heart disease." On the club's Web site, you can get more information, make a donation, buy a T-shirt, leave messages for Brian, and watch video public service announcements. ... More Sites of the Day
