Preparing the camp for your child with special needs

Our guidelines for Preparing the School for Your Child with Special Needs are good for more than just informing teachers and ensuring a productive academic year. They're also helpful for informing camp personnel about your child's special needs. Especially if your child will be at the same camp all summer, or will be staying overnight far from home, prepare a packet of information for counselors just as you would for teachers. You may want to provide it before your child shows up for the first day -- perhaps bringing it to an orientation meeting or other pre-camp activity. If the camp is not specifically special-needs oriented, they may not be accustomed to receiving such material, but if they're resistant to even considering it; you might want to think about whether your child's in the right place. ...
