Does your child's school condone costumes?

Tuesday October 31, 2006
I was at my son's school yesterday when the warning came over the intercom: "This is to remind all students that there will be NO Halloween costumes allowed tomorrow. No costumes, no makeup, no hair dye. No exceptions." That's on top of no parties, of course, because these are middle schoolers, and they're not allowed to have fun. Not like in elementary school, where at least they had parties -- although even there, no costumes past kindergarten. And honestly, though it seems killjoy-ish, I can see why school administrators aren't enthusiastic about students dressing up during school hours; it's hard enough to get some of these kids to pay attention and be respectful under normal circumstances. Kids with special needs in particular may not respond well to wearing weird clothes or watching weird clothes, and since my son hasn't even decided what weird clothes he's going to don tonight, or even if he is, I appreciate the lack of pressure to get things going on a hectic school morning. Does your school cut you the same break, or is dress up allowed? Pick a response from the poll at right, then give your personal pro- or anti-school costume rant in the comments below.

(1) Jesus says:

i think weird clothes are fantastic, and i think if some kid can’t function because he sees something weird, that kid is beyond help. if i had a dollar for every ugly person, or just flat out annoying person that distracted me, let me tell you, i’d be rich. weird clothes should not be a factor, only a truly disturbed person, gets distracted by clothes, i mean, come on
