Masks by Jan Brett

Tuesday October 31, 2006
Halloween Site of the Day Special: The Parenting Special Needs Site of the Day has been taken over by goblins and, throughout the month of October, will feature a daily site offering Halloween help and happiness to kids with special needs. Stuck without a costume for your child at the last minute? The Web site of children's author Jan Brett has some beautiful animal masks to print out and wear. Your child can choose from critters featured in Brett books The Umbrella, The Gingerbread Baby, The Hat, The Mitten, and Town Mouse Country Mouse. Rather than punching holes in the sides and tying the mask around your child's face, try gluing the mask to a piece of stiff paper like the side of a file folder, cutting it out, and taping it to a ruler or long stick. Letting your child put the mask in front of his face when he says "trick or treat" but not when he's walking from door to door may make for a more comfortable, less sensory-assaulting experience.
