Friday Book Club: Math Doesn't Suck

Friday August 24, 2007

Every Friday is book review day for the Harried Parent's Book Club, and today's selection, Math Doesn't Suck, has a title I'm not wild about -- but math tricks, tips and techniques that I absolutely am.

Written by actress Danica McKellar, who you might remember as Winnie Cooper on The Wonder Years or maybe Elsie Snuffin on The West Wing, the book is an engaging look at middle-school math concepts, aimed at helping girls realize that they can do math and be smart and still be cool.

Though it doesn't set out to help kids with learning disabilities, the non-threatening, down-to-earth, simplifying approach used is definitely appropriate for them (although, if your child's a boy, you may want to do some quick adapting of the makeup-, jewelry-, and shopping-heavy examples.)

Read the Book Club review, then stop by the Harried Parent's Book Club Forum to add your opinion and ask questions. Coming next Friday: For the Love of Rachel: A Father's Story.
