Site of the Day: National Braille Press Harry Potter Auction

Friday October 5, 2007

Does a complete set of Harry Potter novels, signed by author J.K. Rowling, sound like something you have to have? It'll set you back -- bidding is up to $3,500 at this writing, with the value of the bunch estimated at $40,000 -- but it'll also benefit a good cause, the National Braille Press's "Hands On! Books for Blind Children" initiative.

Bidding started on October 3 and will continue through a live televised gala on October 26, hosted by Jay Leno.

From the site, you can also learn about less costly ways to donate, and why those donations are needed: Producing a 10-volume Braille version of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, for example, costs $60,000 for the first 900 copies, but donations help National Braille Press offer the copies of to blind readers for the same price the rest of us pay at the bookstore.
