Dr. McDreamy Keeps a Promise to a Patient

Wednesday October 10, 2007

Grey's Anatomy fans -- did you notice that orange wristband Dr. Derek Shepherd had on in an early scene last Wednesday, when he was talking to the Chief? I though it was some sort of costuming statement, so noticeable was it, but turns out it was there for one special young lady to see.

The blog Watching Grey's Anatomy reports that actor Patrick Dempsey received the wristband when he was visiting a young leukemia patient at the Children's Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, and promised he'd wear it on this season's second episode. Sure enough, there it was.

The YouTube video at right documents Dempsey's visit to the bedside of Addison Sewell -- whose friends, according to a story in The Birmingham News, refer to her as "the future Mrs. McDreamy" (she's got the right first name for it; the past Mrs. McDreamy was an Addison, too). He delivers some gifts, autographs a poster, and chats a little with the teen, who was hospitalized for treatments of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. He also receives the wristband, which has Addison's name and the words "Stay Strong," and makes plans to wear it on camera.

Has your child had a close celebrity encounter in a hospital or other special-needs context? Share your story in the comments.
