Site of the Day: Angel Boy Art

Friday December 7, 2007

Dedicated to "exploring the myriad of ways art can benefit special needs children and their families," Angel Boy Art is an online gallery of artwork by children with disabilities, a place where these young artists can both sell their work and share their talent.

The original Angel Boy artist, Louis Angelo Vitale Jr., will be featured with his family on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition this Sunday. Two-year-old Louie has multiple birth defects, including arthogryposis, club feet, and skeletal displasia. He started painting as part of his physical therapy, and it has become a great method of self-expression and communication for him.

His mother started Angel Boy Art to spread those benefits to other children. On the site, you can sign up your child as a new artist, read about programs the foundation is pursuing, and get some good ideas for doing some artwork projects at home. You can also browse the galleries of the young featured artists, and purchase a print or make a donation.

Amazing! I was so inspired by the show and immediately visited the website! I have a degree in early childhood education and work with special needs students. I sat watching the show with tears of joy as I saw the children painting at David’s House, and I cried along with Little Louie’s family and friends with the showing of the art gallery! Truly inspiring to see the strength of a family’s unconditional love and the hearts to continuously help those around us! God bless you all!

While watching this edition of Extreme Makeover, I just had to write. I have a brother who has autism. He suffered a lot as a child and young adult. I decided as a child that someday I was going to help to make life better for my brother and other people with disabilities. So, I work with adults and children with disablilities. Your story is so inspiring. Louie is so blessed to have such a loving family, so many others have no one. So, myself and my fellow employees become their family. We believe that with the right supports, we all can achive and be all that we can be. I will refer others to your site. You are so awesome!

I just watched the extreme makeover episode that featured the Vitale family and I couldn’t stop crying. This family and those little boys are so very special. What those parents sacrifice just so that Louie Jr. can get through the day is inspiring to other parents. It gave me a real appreciation of family and a lesson in humility, for when I think my day has been stressed and my kids make me want to pull my hair out I have nothing on the stress and endurance of the Vitale family, a family that has so much love. Thank you for your story. Please give both your sons a hug from a newly appreciative mother of 2.

I have a wonderful stepson with Fragile X syndrome. While I was watching the Vitale family on Extreme Home Makeover I was so moved by the love and caring for little Louie. His dad says he is a fighter. My stepson to is a fighter. He is now 26 and lives in a group home not far from my husband and myself. I know if little Louie is as great a fighter as my stepson he will make it beyond his dad and mom’s wildest dreams. Good luck to you all and God bless.

(13) Lynda Jaye Fernandez says:

I watched the Extreme Makeover show with baby Louie and I would like to know how to get in contact with the Mom so i could purchase a couple of baby Louie’s art. I would love to have them displayed in my house. It would be a blessing to help show how we love the family and want to help them by purchasing and telling others of this art program. I hope I am allowed to buy a painting(original) of baby Louie’s. When I saw the painting where Mom said it was a dolphin picture, my ears perked up, as I love dolphins and I have always said, when I die, I will be swimming with the dolphins finally. IF there is a way for you to contact me and let me know if I can purchase some art of baby Louie’s, please email me at the given email. Thank you. I would love to call you and see about purchasing. God bless your family to the most highest. In Christ…Lynda Jaye
