In the Forum: Oxygen Dependent Children

Wednesday January 16, 2008

A lengthy forum topic on oxygen-dependent children got a new entry this week, from a mom who has some concerns over how her son's medical needs will be handled once he starts kindergarten.

Writes Tracy: "I have a great little guy with down's syndrome. He is not on O2 all the time but for many months of the year. Right now, he misses weeks upon weeks of school because of an oxygen requirement, and has since 9 months old. No one at his IU has ever thought this was a concern. He is nonverbal and needs his school! Anyway, I can't even fathom him beginning kindergarten this fall for a multitude of reasons, but if he is oxygen dependent, does he just stay home? I know that there must be some type of medical IEP but where to start..."
