Blame, Botox, and More of Your Comments

Readers are sounding off in the comments all over this Parenting Special Needs blog, but it can be hard to find and respond to those opinions when they're on posts past this main page. To give you an easy view of the outrage and the outreach, here are some of the things your fellow readers have been saying in the past couple of weeks. "Which came first, the anxiety and depression or the asthma? I know I was looking at my daughter this morning, mulling over how fragile and yet how strong life can be. Spending months at NICU can be hard, for everyone involved, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they discovered later that having an asthmatic child leads to *drumroll* stress and depression." -- sylrayj on "Another Disorder Blamed on Moms"

"I have had experiences with restraints, as a child, as I had to have many surgeries and other procedures done. I was often restrained manually (hands and feet) during long hospital stays (largely so I would not pull out tubes and that I would hold still during medical procedure that were at sometimes extremely painful). I am autistic (but mildly so), and am fairly strong, especially if I feel someone is going to hurt me. I had stitches in my forehead as a child, and even though I was only crying, I was put in a papoose board before I could fight. I think that papoose boards and restraints are evil, but if a restraint MUST be used, the papoose board is 1000x better than the manual 'chains.'" -- T O on "Papoose Boards Make Child Restraint ... Easy? Inhumane?"

"My child had a stroke during labor. She has had the botox injections twice, b/c her right side was affected. Her muscles are very tight. when she has botox injections her muscles loosen up, but are they safe to continue for long periods of time? She is 2 1/2 yrs old. If anyone could tell me more info I would appreciate it." -- cjohnson on "Botox Helps Kids With CP"

"We are planning a vacation soon and I was worried about all the airport security measures. I have 3 children on medication and it is a relief to know that the saline solutions and other items will not be banned." -- Deb Fjeld on "Site of the Day: Travelers With Disabilities and Medical Conditions"

"I remember, not too long ago, there was a study done that said children whose parents put nightlights in their bedrooms were more likely to become nearsighted. Then, for the length of one breath, parents wondered….Am I hurting my child by putting a nightlight in her room??? Several months later, that study was 'debunked' when a logical explanation came out that nearsighted parents were more likely to need a nightlight to maneuver in the dark for nighttime feedings…therefore, nearsighted parents are more likely to have nearsighted children……..GENIUS!" -- LisaA on "Another Disorder Blamed on Moms"

There’s a bit of an error – I’m not the source of the quote about airline security. :)

Ack! This is what I get for cutting and pasting.

Apologies to you and Deb both for the misattribution. It’s fixed now.
