Site of the Day: North American Riding for the Handicapped Association
If you caught Extreme Makeover: Home Edition last night -- and I didn't, because we were an all-football zone -- you saw a new house and riding facility built for a family involved in therapeutic horseback riding. You may have heard mention of NARHA, the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association. And you may have wondered, how can I get my child on one of those horses?
The NARHA site can help you do that. In addition to providing information about therapeutic riding and hippotherapy (look in the drop-down menus at the right under "Resources"), it offers a database of qualified riding centers. Choose a U.S. state or Canadian province to find a center near you, then contact that facility directly for more information on what is offered.
My son participated in therapeutic riding classes for a few years, until his therapist moved away and the program closed, and really enjoyed it. If what you saw on Extreme Makeover inspires you, do visit the NARHA site and check it out.
