Birth Defect Research for Children was started by parents who found out their child's birth defects had been caused by a medication the mother was prescribed during pregnancy. They helped to get that drug removed from the market, and started an organization to examine other toxic exposures and help parents network about their children's special needs.
On the Birth Defect Research site, you can enter your child in the National Birth Defect Registry, and also sign up for the Parent Matching Project, which exchanges names and contact information for parents of children with similar disabilities. There's also information on other research projects and prevention, and a store for "green" products.
