Every Friday is book review day for the Harried Parent's Book Club, and throughout the month of April -- Autism Awareness Month -- we've been looking at books on autism spectrum disorders.
This week's selection, Dr. Thompson's Straight Talk on Autism, offers well-researched, thought-out, and spelled-out ideas on handling everything from communication problems to sensory oversensitivities to toilet training to playdates. The advice is practical and hands-on, and the text is quick and easy-to-read. Those things make it a five-star book by my rules, and if I'm not sure that all these suggestions will really resolve problems as easily as indicated, there's such a wealth of ideas and inspirations that I'm happy to extend the benefit of the doubt.
Read the Book Club review, then stop by the Harried Parent's Book Club Forum to add your opinion and ask questions. Coming next week: Last Child in the Woods.
