My daughter's current TV addiction is the Nickelodeon show The Brothers Garcia, and one episode she's watched several times lately involves the oldest brother shaving his head out of solidarity with a female schoolmate who has cancer. I thought of that story when I saw this site for St. Baldrick's Foundation, which takes that charitable impulse to go bald for a buddy and makes it into an actual charity.

St. Baldrick's organizes events in which volunteers can take pledges for shaving their head, with the money going toward cancer research.
