My Reading Homework for Fall

Thursday August 28, 2008

Like a schoolkid freed from the demands of book reports and assigned reading, I slacked off on my Harried Parent's Book Club reviewing duties this summer, slipping from a book a week to a book ... whenever. But as my family transitions back into school mode, I'm resolving to get my reading back on track. There's a big pile of books staring me down each time I pass the bookcase, and it's time to get to them.

These are some of the books I'm hoping to get to over the next few months:
  • Helping Teens Who Cut: Understanding and Ending Self-Injury by Michael Hollander, PhD
  • Young Children's Behavior: Practical Approaches for Caregivers and Teachers by Louise Porter
  • What Works for Bipolar Kids: Help and Hope for Parents by Mani Pavuluri, MD, PhD
  • The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome by Tony Attwood
  • Getting the Best for Your Child With Autism: An Expert's Guide to Treatment by Bryna Siegel, PhD
  • Autism and Its Medical Management: A Guide for Parents and Professionals by Michael G. Chez MD
  • Smart But Scattered: The Revolutionary "Executive Skills" Approach to Helping Kids Reach Their Potential by Peg Dawson, EdD, and Richard Guare, PhD
  • The Kid-Friendly ADHD & Autism Cookbook: The Ultimate Guide to the Gluten-Free, Casein-Free Diet by Pamela J. Compart, MD, and Dana Laske, RDH, MS, LDN
  • Adults With Down Syndrome by Siegfried M. Pueschel
  • Person-Centered Planning Made Easy: The PICTURE Method by Steve Holburn, Anne Gordon and Peter M. Vietze
  • When the Labels Don't Fit: A New Approach to Raising a Challenging Child by Barbara Probst, MSW, LCSW
  • The Teacher's Guide to Inclusive Education: 750 Strategies for Success! by Peggy A. Hammeken
Actually, that last one's probably going first; it's an update to an earlier inclusion book I liked very much, and I'm eager to see how Hammeken managed to come up with 300 more strategies. Look for weekly reviews to commence again on Monday, September 8. And if there's a book you've been wondering about that you'd like me to do a test-read on, mention it in the comments here.
