"I interviewed an inclusion specialist who told me she no longer made public the names of districts she works with, because it seemed to encourage parents to actually move to the district! As a result, of course, the districts were becoming increasingly a 'special needs haven' -- not an ideal situation, based on the present NCLB laws and lack of IDEA funding ..." -- Lisa on "Would You Take Your Child's School Funding and Split?"
"Ultimately, it is the most helpful thing not only for the standard teacher but also as a way to aid subs or if the school have various student levels, students are identified by the ID and the color badge they wear. I love it and I have no issue with a student playing with the badges within reason, some kids have to have things in their hands to process the information they are receiving." -- Shannon on "An ID Badge as the Ultimate School Fidget Toy"
"I have a brother who has autism. He suffered a lot as a child and young adult. I decided as a child that someday I was going to help to make life better for my brother and other people with disabilities. So, I work with adults and children with disabilities. ... Louie is so blessed to have such a loving family, so many others have no one. So, myself and my fellow employees become their family. We believe that with the right supports, we all can achieve and be all that we can be." -- Kathy on "Site of the Day: Angel Boy Art"
"I am currently writing a book for student teachers; a large section of this book will be dedicated to teaching children with special needs. I am looking for parents to write short testimonials that can be featured within the text. Tell me about your child’s experience in an inclusive classroom, or how you help the teacher prepare for your child’s special needs, or how hard it is to leave your child in the morning for school, or how important parent-teacher communication really is. All of these things are so important for our teachers to know. Please help me to educate our future teachers!" -- Katie on "Wordless Wednesday: You Make a Difference"
"Does Dennis Leary really think that I ('Mary the Mom') am that stupid as to fall for an obvious marketing ploy? But perhaps we are being a little oversensitive here. After all I love a good joke about nationality, race, gender, sexual persuasion, religion, political views (who hasn’t watched SNL lately?). So, why not poke fun at our children and their disabilities? Perhaps in Dennis’ next book he could write a chapter on Down Syndrome or Cystic Fibrosis. I know, how about a chapter called “Let’s Take A Whifida of Spina Bifida.” Now that’s funny!" -- Elizabeth on "Will Denis Leary's Comments Look Better in Context?"
