Read: "Whether the child is in first grade, middle school, high school, or college, the concerns echo the same themes: Can my child handle the demands being placed on him? Are there identifiable issues that explain why he is struggling? How can we keep him from becoming overly discouraged? How can we overcome his sense of discouragement and give him a sense of self-worth?" -- Richard Selznick, Ph.D., The Shut-Down Learner, our book of the week
Reflect: Do I focus so much on strengthening academics that I trample my child's self-esteem? Am I sensitive to my child's discouragement, and sympathetic to the struggle?
Respond: Children with learning challenges get enough negativity at school, they deserve some cheerleading at home. While you're doing what you have to do to make sure schoolwork gets done, make sure to do some self-esteem homework with your child as well.
Every weekday, take a moment to read, reflect, and respond to a passage from a book, blog, or article. ... More Reflections
