Small item of special-needs interest at the Tony Awards last night: Next to Normal, a musical about a woman with bipolar disorder, won three awards, including Best Actress in a Musical for star Alice Ripley (at center in photo) and Best Original Score. If you're curious about the musical now, Kimberly Read of About.com Bipolar Disorder has an interview with Tony-winning lyricist Brian Yorkey, in which he discusses his inspiration and research and observes, "Some of the PR for the show says it's about 'a family in crisis,' and I always add, 'But really, what family isn't?'" You can view clips and photos on the show's Web site and the Tony site, as well as YouTube.
What disability would you like to see get the theatrical treatment? I'm up for an FASD musical, how 'bout you?
