Site of the Day: Angel Food Ministries

Tuesday June 9, 2009

What It Is: "Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing grocery relief and financial support to communities throughout the United States."

Who's In Charge: Churches around the U.S. handle orders and distribution while Angel Food does the purchasing, using volume discounts to provide boxes of first-quality fresh and frozen food to families at a reduced price.

Why It's Worth Checking Out: The ministry includes allergen-free boxes among its selections, making this an option for families who may have a hard time paying higher prices for specialty foods. Food in the boxes is "processed to eliminate the eight top serious allergens: Peanuts, Soybeans, Milk, Eggs, Fish, Crustacea, Tree Nuts and Gluten (wheat, rye and barley)."

Where to Start: Find a host church near you.

My family and I have used Angel Food for 3 years. This is a great service. It’s not a food pantry – anyone can receive help, regardless of income level. In our area we get a huge box of food for $35 – I have calculated that I would have to spend at least double that amount to get the same food at the grocery store. I would definitely recommend anyone to check this out.

I like Angel Food. For $30 you get quality groceries worth about $60. That’s a big help. Volunteers distributing the food at the churches are friendly. They give their time just to serve people. The host sites are at http://www.angelfoodministries.com/hosts.asp
