My son's IEP meeting is right after the New Year, assuring that everyone attending will still be in a fog of back-to-school-after-break. This isn't a terribly serious meeting with oodles at stake, but there are a few issues that will need serious discussion, and I've been to enough IEP meetings to know that they're difficult places for serious discussion. So I'm trying to touch base with the major players in this half-week before the holiday to feel them out and hope for some sort of pre-consensus.
I need to make sure I'm not the only one who feels he should wade further into inclusion after some success this year; all who suspect said success is insuffiencently solid to build on better speak now or forever hold their peace. I need to make sure we have a clue about what electives he should have; last year, the IEP meeting conversation stopped with a thud when we got to electives, and as a result he's gotten a couple of bad matches. And I need to make sure that everybody understands his need to continue on with a one-on-one paraprofessional, independence not being a high-priority goal for kids with FASD. I've been merrily sending out notes and e-mails asking for input, and already had one nice chat with a teacher.
Talking to teachers outside the high pressure and tight schedule of an IEP meeting is always a good idea for getting an expanded viewpoint and increased candor and maybe some good gossip. I've got more IEP meeting prep suggestions in my article Before You Go to an IEP Meeting, and I'd love to hear about how you get ready, too. Share your strategies on the Readers Respond page on the subject.
What IEP issues are you facing this year?

I totally agree. Those “pre-IEP meetings” are so important. We got wind last year during our pre IEP dance that our son’s provider was going to try to backhand us with suggesting special day class for him (for a citizen of the YEAR and honor roll student?????) We informed everyone else on the team this was their plan and everyone came loaded with evidence to refute their recommendation. We were even able to change providers (somewhat unheard of)_ My son is happily in regular ed all day with a one on one and has continued to progress. Score for mom and dad. Hope we can continue to have a good relationship with the school and continue this strategy.
