Your Comments on Catholic School and Special Education

By January 25, 2013

KeyboardIn the comments again this week are thoughts on the subject of Catholic schools and special education. Reader Mary wrote, "My daughter went to Catholic school for two years. The third year I was told they couldn't 'accomodate her needs.' She was devastated. It took her two years at the local public school before she stopped thinking that 'they kicked her out' because she needed special ed for reading and math." Another reader, Sandi, writes of being "shocked to find that our Catholic school had no place" for her granddaughter with special needs. Is this a battle you've fought, or do you know of Catholic schools that are making this work? Join that ongoing discussion.

Also getting continued comments is a 2006 post on "Is Being Short a Disability?" This week's addition is from a four-foot-ten-inch father of two who says that "I wouldn't class being short as a disability but it can hold you back. I mean if we were all the same size then it would be a boring place." For more discussion of issues of interest to parents of children with special needs, check the forum, which, as I mentioned in blog post a couple of days ago, received new messages this week on kids who steal and divorce/custody for a child with Down syndrome. Your comments are also very much wanted on the topic of resources that should be considered for 2013 Readers' Choice Awards -- please check out the categories and keep those nominations coming for favorite special-needs blog, parenting book, memoir, children's book, online community, regional resource, app, and Twitter feed.
