Cyberchase: Tangrams

Wednesday March 8, 2006
Tangrams are big deal in math classes these days -- the game of recreating designs with miscellaneous smaller shapes is apparently intended to lure kids unsuspectingly into an understanding of geometry. If you'd like to work on Tangrams with your math-challenged kiddo but just know that all those little triangles and squares and trapezoids would wind up under the couch, try this online Tangram Game from the site of the PBS show Cyberchase. Choose one of 20 designs to make, hit "Break Apart" to split the pieces from their previous configuration, and slide the shapes into place. Neat! And also, neat. (Hint: When you click on "Hint," tiny lines show up in the small illustration to show you where the shapes fall. I was hoping for pieces to hop into place when I did that, but no.) ...
