Should smoking be banned in cars carrying children?

Wednesday December 6, 2006
We have no smokers in our family, so the smoking ban in restaurants has been super -- no more waiting for a non-smoking table! The smoking ban in airplanes has been refreshing -- no more fumes wafting from the smoking section! The smoking ban in our local bowling alley has been a relief -- no more clothes that smell like the inside of an ashtray after parent-child bowling league! (Okay, so now they smell like the deep-fat fryer in the snack bar; it's an improvement.) The latest smoking ban being considered by states around the U.S. is a ban on smoking in cars, and of course, that puts no speed bumps in our lifestyle either; folks who are already finding it harder and harder to smoke in public might have something else to say about the sanctity of their vehicles being violated, though. The bans only apply when there are children in the car, with fines for exposing the tykes to second-hand smoke in that small space. Certainly for children with respiratory problems, it's a good thing, and to prevent respiratory problems in children, too. But stressing out smoking parents who are already dealing with dueling noisy kiddies and CDs full of Wiggles songs? Might lead to an increase in Road Rage. What do you think about banning smoking when there are children in the car? Pick a choice from the poll at right, and expand your opinion in the comments.
