A study in the journal Pediatrics suggests that the oft-cited exponential rise in autism diagnoses may not reflect an increase in the actual numbers of autistic children. The researchers mentioned increased public awareness, higher likelihood of diagnosis and differing criteria for diagnosis as factors inflating the figures.
