In addition to one big field trip a week, we scheduled weekly events that formed the backbone of our summer routine. Tuesday was bowling day, and we'd go to the local lanes and play a couple of games. The proprietor gave us a deal on the cost and provided trophies and pizza at the end of the summer. Wednesday was free movie morning at the local multiplex, and we joined the much larger groups from local day camps. One day a week, depending on weather, we went to a park in town and tried out the playground -- our town has enough parks that we could go to a different one each time. Having regularly scheduled events like this gave the kids some routine to hold on to, and relieved us moms from having to micromanage every minute.
