First Five Things to Do After Your Child Is Diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis

By Terri Mauro, About.com

1: STOP smoking, or severely limit the amount of secondhand smoke your child is exposed to, and follow these other tips for keeping your child healthy.

2: READ "A Journey With Your Child and Cystic Fibrosis" to get advice on handling your feelings over the diagnosis -- and know that other parents share them.

3: LOCATE a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation accredited Care Center in your area for specialized care and counseling.

4: JOIN CFParents or another e-mail support group to get ideas and support from fellow parents.

5: VISIT our listing of Cystic Fibrosis links for more information and ideas.

Do you have suggestions for parents of children newly diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis? Tell them about that book that explained everything, that website full of resources, that e-mail group you still lean on, that experience with your child that made you see things differently. Those of us who have been there have important gifts to give those who have not yet done that. Offer your words of wisdom and experience where you see "Tell Your Tips" below.
