Body Odor Basics for Teens With Special Needs

The Secret Weapon

Parents can nag and bribe and threaten and cajole all they want, but sometimes teens won't believe what they say about body odor, just because it's Mom and Dad who are saying it. Particularly if your child can't smell the BO or hasn't grown into the social anxiety of caring what other people think, he may be convinced that you're just making it up to hassle him.

This is where your secret weapon comes in: Another, impartial adult. Preferably, an adult (or older teen) whom your young person believes is infinitely smarter, cooler, clued-in and desirable than yourself.

If there is such a person in your teen's life, recruit that individual to break the news to your kid that she stinks. Have The Cool One suggest some cool soap and cool deodorant and cool grooming products that your teen will want to try to be cool, too.

Then let your child talk you into getting all that good stuff.
