4. Mental Illness Awareness Week

What It Is: "In 1990, the U.S. Congress established the first week of October as Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) in recognition of NAMI's efforts to raise mental illness awareness. Since 1990, mental health advocates across the country have joined together during the first full week of October to celebrate." On the site for the National Alliance on Mental Illness, you can read more about the week's activities and download materials to distribute.

5. World Teacher Day

What It Is: "On World Teachers’ Day 2010 hundreds of thousands of students, parents and activists around the world will pay homage to all teachers who have been directly or indirectly affected by a major crisis. All those who are fighting to provide quality education to children of the world can join teachers and their representative organizations to celebrate the profession and show them their support!"

6. Wonder Capes

What It Is: A company that sells superhero capes for kids also allows you to donate one to a hospitalized child. "Comfort Capes are made with soft flannel fabric, for hospitalized children. The goal is to be soft to the touch. Something they can snuggle with. Keep them warm. Whatever they need or want their Cape to be."

7. All About Parenting Blog Carnival on Halloween

What It Is: Sherri Osborne, About.com's guide to Family Crafts, hosts this month's carnival featuring blog posts on Halloween topics, including mine on hating the holiday.

8. Yes I Can! Awards

What It Is: "The Yes I Can! Awards were established to honor children and youth with disabilities who have excelled. Thousands of children and youth have been recognized since the program’s inception in 1982. Each year, CEC selects approximately 27 winners for their outstanding achievements in one of nine categories." Nominations for the 2011 awards must be postmarked by October 22.
