Definition:
Asperger Syndrome (AS) is a developmental disorder at the "high-functioning" end of the autism spectrum (see also Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)). Children with Asperger syndrome -- more frequently boys than girls -- may have obsessions with particular objects or subjects, be stiff in their social interactions, speak in a monotone, or otherwise display eccentric behavior. The disorder was named for Hans Asperger, an Austrian pediatrician who first observed it in 1944.
