Definition:
Bipolar Disorder (BP) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by swings in mood between mania -- which in children and teens might include irritability, tantrums and destructive behavior -- and depression. Formerly called manic depression and diagnosed mainly in adults, BP is now being identified in younger and younger children. Unlike adults, who may have more distinct episodes of mania and depression, young people with BP can cycle between moods many times a day. BP is generally treated with medication and therapy.
