By , About.com Guide

Definition:

Celiac disease is a genetic condition in which damage to the small intestine prevents the absorption of certain nutrients. Children with celiac disease must avoid ingesting anything that contains the protein gluten, particularly wheat, barley, rye and most oats. There is currently no cure for celiac disease, but it can be managed with a gluten-free diet.
