Cystic fibrosis

By Terri Mauro, About.com

Definition:

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disorder in which excessive mucous clogs the lungs and pancreas, causing respiratory and digestive problems. Children are usually diagnosed in the first few years of life, and less than half live beyond the age of 18. For those that do, life expectancy is about 35 years, although that may improve with more advanced treatment options. To inherit CF, an individual must receive a CF gene from each parent.
