What Is Guillain-Barré Syndrome?

Definition:

Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by muscle weakness, paralysis and trouble breathing. It occurs when the immune system attacks the nervous system, often following an infection, surgery or trauma. Recently, several teens receiving the meningitis vaccine have been diagnosed with GBS, indicating a possible link. While the condition can be serious and even life-threatening, it is usually reversible in children, although some rehabilitation may be required.
