Landau-Kleffner Syndrome

By Terri Mauro, About.com

Definition:

Landau-Kleffner Syndrome (LKS) is a neurological disorder in which normally developing children lose the ability to speak or understand speech, often suddenly. The syndrome is usually accompanied by epileptic seizures. Children may also have behavior problems, or appear autistic. Medication can treat the seizures, and there are also medication and surgical options that can improve the language problems of some children with LKS. Others may learn to communicate through sign language or writing.
