Muscular Dystrophy

By Terri Mauro, About.com

Definition:

Muscular Dystrophy (MD) is a genetic disorder in which the muscles that control movement become progressively weaker. There are nine types of MD, some diagnosed at birth, others in childhood, adolescence or adulthood. The prognosis also varies by type and how quickly the muscle weakness progresses. There is currently no cure for MD, but there are therapies and drugs that can manage the symptoms and slow muscle deterioration.
