July 2009

By , About.com Guide

Every weekday, Monday through Friday on the About.com Parenting Special Needs blog, I offer a Parenting Tip of the Day. Here's an index of the parenting tips given in June 2009. Click on the link to read the full tip.

< June 2009 | August 2009 >

7/1: What to do when there's nothing to do.

"Mom, I'm boooooooooooored." What parent doesn't live in fear of hearing that again and again and again and again and again? Continued

7/2: Take a walk with your child.

Of all your exercise options, going for a walk is probably the cheapest, easiest, and most ripe for enrichment experiences. Continued

7/3: Prepare for July 4 trauma.

The booming and snapping of fireworks may be thrilling to some kids, but if your child has sensory integration problems, the loud noises could be more terrifying and thrilling. Continued

7/6: Be ready for fun emergencies.

When you've got a bunch of little ones looking to you for amusement and no planned activities or purchased supplies to employ, it helps to be able to turn ordinary household ingredients into the makings of fun on the fly. Continued

7/7: Get started with that special-needs trust.

If you've been to meetings about future planning for your child with special needs, or spent much time with other parents, or read articles on estate planning, you've probably gotten the message that you ought to put money in a Special Needs Trust so that your adult child does not lose services due to maximum income requirements. Continued

7/8: Blog Carnival Theme Is "Cheap Fun"

If you have a blog and some good ideas for inexpensive play, consider making a submission to the August edition of the All About Parenting Blog Carnival, hosted by Single Parents Guide Jennifer Wolf. Continued

7/9: Find news on your topic of obsession.

If you're only interested in, say, autism news or special education news, find your topic on the list and bookmark it to check regularly. Continued

7/10: Get help finding the sites you seek.

I do my best to make this About.com Parenting Special Needs site a useful place to find articles, information, and commentary on children's disabilities. Part of that is directing you to other resources of interest around the Web, from serious sites on specific diagnoses to advocacy-minded organizations to help you fight for your child to personal offerings that inspire or amuse. Continued

7/13: Start your own summer bowling league

If an existing league is a bad fit, improvise your own by hand-picking some kids who play well with yours, checking with the bowling alley for an uncrowded time, and planning a weekly bowling playdate. Continued

7/14: Plan for a successful Disney vacation.

A trip to a Disney theme park is the highlight of many a summer vacation -- don't ruin the magic by assuming your child's behavioral challenges will magically disappear with a wave of Tinker Bell's wand. Continued
