How often should I meet with my child's teacher?

Question: How often should I meet with my child's teacher?
Answer: If the teacher requests a conference, you'll certainly want to make yourself availalbe. And if you have a pressing concern that needs to be addressed right away, don't delay in requesting a meeting yourself. But other than those emergency situations, try to check in with your child's teacher when you get progress reports and report cards -- depending on your district's schedule, about every five weeks. That should be enough to get questions answered and stay on top of problems without you or the teacher bugging each other to death.

Your child's school may provide space on the report card for requesting a meeting, or host open after-school sessions when anyone can come in to talk. Take advantage of these opportunities, even if your child's grades and behavior are good. So many parents never make contact that teachers welcome those who are interested and involved. If it helps, keep a list going of things to talk to the teacher about: a question about homework, a comment about tests, a request for notes or textbooks. Add to it throughout each five-week period, and then bring it with you to your meeting. For tips on how to get the most out of that get-together, read "How to Have a Productive Teacher Conference."
