Reader Stories: Gifts for Teachers, Therapists, and Other Special People

From Suzi

What We Gave

Framed photograph of the child, with a hand written / drawn note.

How We Made It

We got some plastic frames on sale, took an old puzzle that had missing pieces and spray painted the pieces in holiday colors (gold, red, green, silver, etc.) Once they were dry we hot glued them to the frame corners. Put in a photograph with a printed caption that says "Thanks for being part of the solution to the puzzle in our (Child name's) life!"

Then we had our kids draw or write something to the Teacher and we also asked them questions and wrote out what they replied. Things like "What do you want to tell Teacher about this card? or Tell me your favorite thing to do in ___ class"

Tips and Tricks

  • spray paint on wax paper not newsprint, so the pieces don't stick
  • if your child can't help hot glue, do that part after s/he is in bed
  • try to pick photos of your child doing things that show progress in the area that the teacher/therapist works with him in (ie - grasping a crayon for the OT)

Materials Needed

frames, photos, puzzle pieces, wax paper, spray paint, hot glue, cards

Appropriate For

any age, any stage -- hot glue & spray paint need supervision!

Terri Mauro, Children With Special Needs Guide, says:

For those like me who are afraid of spray paint, you might just trace a puzzle piece onto a piece of construction paper, card stock, or foil gift-wrap and use that instead. Or color or glitter-glue the underside of the puzzle piece and attach it to the frame underside-up.
