Why I Started
Like every parent, everything in my world – from my relationships with family and friends to a simple visit to the grocery store – seemed to change when I found out my son had autism. All the rules and norms – the big and the very small – also changed. It’s an ongoing journey we take to come to terms with it all and to re-adjust our expectations and how we interact with the world. I’ve noticed that many special needs parents will blog about their amazing kids. My blog is a series of stories about my new “high functioning life” and the lives of all of those amazing parents who experience and navigate our new world.
How I Do It
I write 500 – 700 word stories that I post every Thursday. Each post is sparked by a recent experience whether it’s a TV show, visit to Santa, a holiday, or my favorite – family gatherings – and how these happenings cause us to re-examine our basic feelings around hope, denial, acceptance, judgment, and, of course, love.
Advice
- Stay to a schedule. I post once a week (every Thursday morning). Many bloggers post more frequently. Either way, I think it’s important to be consistent. I also write on a schedule. I start a post every Monday. I would suggest really thinking through your blog and what you are trying to accomplish or convey to your audience. I’d also suggest writing a few posts before you start. I wrote about 10 blog postings before I launched my blog so that I could get my writing rhythm and tone down as well as get a feel for how long it would take me to write a post, what length I thought would work, etc.
